St. Maria Regina Catholic Church Design Competition

Bintaro, Jakarta,
Indonesia _ 2001

Client: St. Mary Bintaro Catholic Church
Award: 2nd place winner
Collaborator: Ahmad Djuhara

In Indonesia, a moslem majority country, it is very difficult to build a catholic church in the middle an Islamic community.

The design brief that was issued by local government stated clearly that the proposed church should not be looked like a church. And also the tension on religious clashes in Jakarta has risen up in the recent years.

In front of the church we create a social buffer by covering the parking space with trees, so the church seems to be hidden behind the trees. The trees function as shelter for local community to build food stalls. It will provide an interaction space between the church and its surroundings.
